Passports & Visas

A standard 10 year passport is required for entry to Kenya that should be valid for the complete holiday and including at least 6 months validity (after return).

Visa application forms and detailed information can be obtained through Kenya Airways web site at: Kenya Visa

All British Nationals now require a visa to enter Kenya. These can be obtained from the Kenya High Commission at a cost of US$50 per visa. Their address and telephone details are:

High Commission for the Republic of Kenya
45 Portland Place
London
W1N 4AS Tel: 020 7636 2371

However if necessary visas can be obtained at the point of entry in Kenya.

Health & Medical Requirements

If you have recently visited a Yellow Fever infected area you are required to have a valid vaccination certificate which must be taken on holiday with you.

Malaria is present and you are also advised to take a course of anti-Malarial pills.

We strongly advise you to reconfirm your vaccination requirements with your own/family doctor. Vaccines are currently available for many infectious diseases. The immunity from vaccines is never immediate or total and it can take some weeks to get full protection. In addition it could take several trips to your doctor so you must plan your vaccinations WELL IN ADVANCE. See Department of Health

Full medical and pharmaceutical facilities are not always available in Kenya and if you use special or particular prescriptions you are advised to take sufficient supplies with you.

Please ensure you take all of your valid vaccination certificates on holiday with you as you could be asked to produce them at the airport.

Lastly and most importantly, you should never travel to a foreign country without taking Holiday and Travel Insurance. You may also consider taking temporary membership of the Flying Doctors Society which will entitle an seriously injured or seriously ill person to free emergency evacuation by air from any part of Kenya to Nairobi where there is a hospital of international standard.

Currency & Credit Cards

The unit of currency is the Kenyan Shilling (Ksh) which is divided into 100 cents (cs). Notes are of the following denominations Ksh 1000, Ksh 500, Ksh 200, Ksh 100, Ksh 50 and coins Ksh 20, 10, 5, 1 and 50 cents, 20 cents, 10 cents and 5 cents

You should note that you are not permitted to import any local currency to any of the East African destinations.

Travellers Cheques and Foreign Bank Notes can be exchanged at all banks and hotels.

American Express, Diners Card, Visa and Access credit cards can be used in some establishments. However please note that not all safari camps accept credit cards.

Electricity

Both mains electricity and generated supply in lodges provide 240volts AC50 cycles. Sockets are normally of the 3 “square” pin variety 13 amp.

Time

Kenya is 3 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

Personal Safety

Kenya society is less affluent than Western society and it is best never to make an ostentatious show of wealth. Though great efforts have been made by the authorities there are still, like in any country in the world, some areas in Nairobi and Mombasa best avoided at night. It is unwise to carry large amounts of cash around with you when exploring Nairobi or Mombasa or any town. It would also be prudent to leave any expensive items of jewellery at home. The Kenya police are generally friendly and helpful to tourists.
