Meru is well known as the place where Elsa the lioness was returned to the wild by Joy Adamson as told in the book Born Free. But it is also a park with a great variety of landscapes and habitats; there are forests, swamp and savannah, plus rivers running down from Mt Kenya which rises in the background. There are many species of wildlife to be seen and it is thought to be one of the best places in Kenya to see leopard and cheetah.

Elsa Kopje

Elsa's Kopje sits on a rocky outcrop in Meru, with 9 stone and thatched cottages and one large family cottage with bedrooms en-suite (1 double, 1 twin) and a private dining area. There is a swimming pool where you can lounge away those quieter hours.

From your cottage, tucked into the rocks and forms of the hill, enjoy a 270 degree view of the beautiful, wild Meru National Park. The landscape and vegetation is fascinating, tracing the lines of ancient landforms created by the series of lava flows off the Nyambene Hills towards the Tana River many millions of years ago. The different soil ages have created distinct patterns of vegetation from lush thick bush to sparse arid sections, a unique and eye-catching eco-system now crisscrossed by 13 tree lined rivers.
